Openness is one of the most important themes today in architecture. This is especially true of office buildings where it is intended in this way to create a pleasant and consequently inspiring ambience. That is certainly the case with the 'bülachsüd' office building in Switzerland - after all, the tenants wish to have installations that allow for an individual designing of the spaces.
The character of the whole is emphasised with architectural 'corners'. bülachsüd did not only use this with the outer form but also with the purposeful use of artificial light as a design element. The most obvious and also most unusual artificial lighting measure is the 'tracing' of storeys with light bands that progress along the whole of the southern facade and, as with the rows of fenestration, bend around the corners. During nocturnal hours the light bands emit blue light that appears as a peaceful, relaxing element, outlining the form and dimensions of the office building and additionally accentuating it. '' The outdoor lighting is part of the whole architectural concept and has an effect far over the boundaries of the site itself,'' commented the architect Jürg Specogna.
